Epiphone Les Paul Special II Review: First Class Quality at a Low Price

The Epiphone Les Paul Special II electric guitar is a musical instrument that embodies the dream which everyone can afford. This is an excellent choice for beginning musicians who want to get acquainted with the sound and feeling of a Les Paul. Providing first-class quality of a Les Paul at a low price an electric guitar replicates the look of the classic Gibson Les Paul that has defined rock music for generations. Of course this is not necessary to compare with the legendary guitar, but from a practical point of view this is really worth the money spent. Many musical instruments of Epiphone that is a trademark of the famous Gibson look the same as expensive Gibson models being as though their economic copy.

Meticulous attention to detail lies in every aspect of this electric guitar’s construction. Recognized sound begins with choosing the right wood.

  • The guitar body is made of mahogany that gives us a thick, velvety timbre rich in bass and lower middle.
  • It is complemented by the neck of the same mahogany with the rosewood fingerboard and is bolted to the deco with standard inlays. There are also the 22 fret with inlay in the form of white dots.
All together it gives a very bold and melodious sound. It should be noted that many guitar companies prefer to make budget musical instruments with alternative toning. In this guitar having many distinctive features of a Les Paul see the mahogany toned wood is a great advantage. Different to the high-end Les Paul set-necked editions а bolt-on neck is necessary to ensure a moderate price. In fact, it does not have a significant negative effect on sound. The guitar is of short scale and its frets are medium in size, ideal if you are with small hands.
Guitar takes the leading position on the quality of assembly in this price category. This can be seen not only externally, but also to the touch. The electric guitar has a convenient shape; it is pleasant to hold in hands, it is well painted and varnished. Guitars Les Paul of less well-known Chinese manufacturers is not even worth comparing, so this model is made qualitatively and soundly. There are two Epiphone humbuckers installed, which can deliver a typically warm, but also full rich sound. In addition, the model is available in three different designs.

Often for budget guitars offers only one color option. But this guitar is different. Perhaps the look of the guitar is the least important factor that is taken into account when buying but one can agree that it plays its positive role when choosing. Various finishes are especially attractive for teenagers who want to look like their own favorite famous players. With regard of the outer finish three color options are available; ebony, cherry sunburst and vintage sunburst. Perhaps the epiphone les paul special ii electric guitar ebony does or “vintage sunburst” not show the striking color version, but “Heritage Cherry Sunburst” definitely will appeal to those who love the brightness, although it is likely that this choice will have to be paid a little.

The hardware is chromed; this takes away a bit of brightness in the sound which is good. We must use strings preferably in nickel to increase the durability of the instrument.

  • Grip profile: 1960 SlimTaper “D” Profile
    Scale: 24.75”628.85mm)
  • Nut: 1.68” (42.67mm)
  • Bridge: Tune-o-Matic
  • There are two Epiphone humbuckers installed, which can deliver a typically warm, but also full rich sound
  • The tailpiece is registered trademark of Epiphone, Stopbar.
The quality of the two pickups is without a doubt one of the best guitar features. They help create the type of tone that you expect from a musical instrument inspired by a Les Paul. The Epiphone is equipped with two pickups of the humbucker type. On the one hand with an Epiphone 650R and on the other hand with an Epiphone 700T which are able to deliver from rich, warm sounds to sounds with sparkling highs and lush depths. The neck pickup gives a tone that is perfect for jazz and blues. However the guitar explodes with sparkle when it is distorted using the bridge pick-up. It gives a powerful rock tone which one can hear in the performance of famous rock bands

Combination Bridge that is very similar to the design of higher-end guitars will undoubtedly add even more value to this entry-level instrument.

The guitar is not overloaded with extras which are certainly a big plus and a safe choice for beginning musicians. There is a basic master tone; master volume knob and a three-way pickup switch for high frequencies and rhythm. Of course they perform their functions and provide all that is appropriate to the style of this guitar. The stopbar tailpiece and tune-o-matic bridge delivered a good quality tuning.
There is no doubt that the Epiphone Les Paul is some of the best-known guitars in the world of musicians. They are ideal guitars to start playing and practicing, since they are quite economical   and its price-quality ratio is quite good.

What makes the Epiphone Les Paul electric guitar so special? To begin with the very low price, of course this is the most impressive feature. But that’s not all.

  • It gives you all the essential elements of a Les Paul.
  • Pickups offer the player the opportunity to experiment in various sounds and tones.
  • In comparison with other models of Les Paul Epiphone Les Paul Special II weighs significantly less which makes it much easier to transport and makes the playing or training much easier.
  • A relatively flat body with a low angle for the neck and the headstock means that there is a much lower risk of damage to the tool if it is tipped over or stacked.

User Reviews

In general, the Epiphone special ii is a low end guitar of high quality, personally I am bothered by the thickness of the neck, I am more used to the Ibanez that is supremely thin, but it is a matter more than tastes. Something that has always happened with the Epiphone is that I find it very difficult to make speed with its. I do not know if it will be the action or the thickness of the neck. The upper bridge usually deteriorates over time (two guitars have already arrived with this broken piece just above the sixth string).
It can be an indicator that does not resist the pressure of the strings well so it is preferable to use them with lighter gauge strings so as not to have a lot of tension in that part.In general lines a good guitar for a beginner, for someone advanced is not a good idea, it is a good quality guitar, well built, usually the annoying octave on the sixth string (normal guitar of this range). It is a good buy for those who want a Gibson guitar but low cost.

Epiphone models

The most prolific range within Epiphone is the Les Paul with more than 40 models, all of them super iconic. It is the founder of the Les Paul model, as it lent the workshop to Les Paul to create his massive guitar model of the same name. In an interview, Les Paul said that competitor Gibson wanted him as a poster boy, and he replied, “I’m only going to Gibson the day you make quality guitars like Epiphone”. When the owner and founder of Epiphone (Epi Stathopoulo) died in 1943, the company went into crisis. But Gibson became so big that, eventually, it ended up buying Epiphone. The Chicago Music (owned by Gibson) buys Epiphone and leaves it only with semi-acoustic production (which was already well-known and respected) and left the massive Epiphone guitar as a cheaper and modest version of the “famous” Gibson Les Paul.

ТAs such, Epiphone became a subsidiary company of Gibson Guitar Corporation manufacturing Les Paul and other models at a lower cost. Visually and ergonomically, the Gibson Les Paul is almost identical to it. Because of its low price, similar look, and the next relationship with Gibson, many guitarists buy an Epiphone as their first guitar. But today this has changed, Epiphone has won the taste of professional musicians again, such as Gary Clark Jr, Paul McCartney (who never stopped using his Casino), among others.
All of the most famous Epiphone models, except the Casino, are replicas of Gibson’s most famous model, the iconic Les Paul (also known as “paula”). Obviously, the construction is not the same as that of the Gibson, that’s why they are its low range. For example, the frets are put mechanically, not manually and the woods that are used are not the same, except in signature or higher priced models. The construction of the bodies is usually made of mahogany or maple, palladium diapasons and glued or bolted fingerboards. The pegbox is usually a Grover and the pickups are typical of Epiphone except in some models where we can find PAF (Gibson PAF). Epiphone has long since moved its manufacturing to Asia, so it is usually made in China or Korea.

It is very comfortable.
It is also a beautiful guitar.
String action is pretty low
The guitar will not stay in tune
This guitar is beyond poor quality

Electric guitars recommended for beginners

First of all we must consider the wood of the neck, because it affects the sound of the guitar, so you should know that a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard gives the instrument a darker tone, while if the keyboard is in maple the sound will tend to be more ringing. As for the pickups instead, you need to know how to choose between single coil, humbucker and both, since there is a substantial sound difference. Single coils consist of 6 magnets wrapped in a copper coil and give the instrument a clear, precise and brilliant sound. Guitarists usually use them when they play in “clean” mode, but in general they prefer to get a strong and not particularly saturated sound.

Tip:It is evident that the prices vary according to the performance of each guitar.  For a good start, our ideals are economical models such as SGR from Schecter C-1 3846 and Ibanez GAX30-TR (best value for money) that do not exceeds € 200 or collect a little more to get Ibanez GRG140, the cost of which is only € 198. In this list, we certainly include the Epiphone Les Paul Special-II also.
