Let me introduce you the methods I was using, while choosing the humbuckers for this list:

  • Personal test

Most of the models in this list are affordable, so buying all of them was not really a problem for me. To be honest, I`ve had an opportunity to test almost all of them, while being a guitarist, so the information given here is mainly the combination of my old and my fresh experiences.

  • Talking to other guitarists[/li_option]

I asked my friends to tell their opinion on certain pickups as well. I didn`t originally intend to do it, but after one occasional talk I realized that other person`s perspective may be really helpful.

  • Checking online reviews

To finish forming my opinion, I checked several websites, where people left their reviews. I didn`t find anything new there, but it helped me with finishing to form the final result.

So here are the best five pickup humbuckers I finally chose.

Wolfetone Dr. Vintage Humbucker Pickups

This thing is called Dr. Vintage, because, who would guess, it is made in a vintage style. I, being the fan of both the vintage style and minimalistic stuff, absolutely love these pickups, as they look like the pickups rockstars would use in the 80s.

Main Features

Let us see what`s so good about these pickups.

Well, these pickups let you get the sound you want, if you adjust them properly. It can either be a harness build, which makes all the sounds clear and full, or the build with offtone gain, which makes sound distorted, which is suitable for the modern rockers.

Tip:If you prefer using a default build, like I do, you`ll probably feel those little sweet vintage patterns. Could be a self-conviction, but all the people I know, who used this pair of pickups reported this feeling as well.

What`s not less important is the actual build quality. The pickups are made of high-quality durable materials, so it will serve much longer, than the warranty promises. Wolfetone can be an actual long-time investment.

I haven`t met any reasonable negative review of these pickups. However, the people, who rate this item below four stars, claim that Les Paul was making better accessories before joining Gibson. That may partly be true, but there are two reasons not to take this into consideration: all the old pickups, which were made by independent Les Paul do not work now or work bad, and Les Paul will never be an independent company again, so we`ll never actually find out if it true or not. So, as these pickups are more than decent, I consider working with them should be perfectly fine.

Short Conclusion

Les Paul Pickups, Wolfetone particulary, is an example of what a pair of great pickups should be. It is compact, durable, doing its` job perfectly fine and having a small unique detail – the vintage theme. So, as long as you are not nostalgic, the only thing that can stop you is being low on budget. For this very reason, I included more affordable models in this list.

Pros
Great Adjustability
Durability
Soft vintage notes
Cons
The sound quality

Seymour Duncan Seth Lover

Speaking of affordable models. Seymour Duncan is an American company, that is mostly known for manufacturing pickups. They have lots of models, including Seth Lover, which is one of the best cheap options on the market.

Main Features

Let us start with the advantages.  I want to emphasize, how versatile this pickup is in all meanings. First: you can place it either on the neck or on the bridge and it will perform equally good. Second: it can be used with both usual guitars and basses. Third: it is suitable for both calm and deep styles and aggressive ones.

Tip:Another nice thing I`ve noticed, is that the low notes sound extremely juicy, when you are using Seth Lover (it`s the name of the engineer, who created this model by the way).

Finally, the build quality is better, than the cheap models usually have. It is not the most durable thing, that will be serving you during your whole life, but you can be sure, that there are at least five or six years.

As you are getting better in music and develop your skills, you start needing better equipment. Undoubtedly, Seth Lover`s model does its` job perfectly and will be good until you reach an upper advanced level. From that point on though, you`ll need something of higher level. The thing is that some models are designed for the professionals and some for the casual players. This one is the second case.

Short Conclusion

This pickup has lots of advantages. It is affordable, it performs much better, than the other pickups from its` category and it can be used with different types of guitars. All these aspects combined make it the best choice for the beginners, amateurs and small independent artists. However, when you decide to go for the next level performance, you`ll need a professional pickup.

Pros
Versatility
Great lows
Decent build quality
Cons
Lack of the potential

Seymour Duncan SH1n

Here is another Duncan`s product, which has to be mentioned in the list. The previous model was a universal one, while this is a more classic version of a humbucker.

Main Features

I associate this pickup with a little ship, because it has lots of small prominent details, which look like the ship pipes and also sort of boards. I guess this little ship won`t let you musical talent sink, as it provides quite a beautiful performance.

Before you even start playing the guitar, you need to adjust this thing to the neck and turn it on. SH1n probably has the easiest installation process ever, as it is connected to the guitar with one wire. No excessive job and nothing that can be confusing.

Once installed it does not stop shining. This pickup responses sensitively to any tone changes, making the sound change as you want it, become higher or lower. Overall volume is full and nice too.

Last, but not the least, there is standard spacing. Standard spacing means that this humbucker will work with any standard guitar. By standard here I mean any guitar, that was made on the factory.

Tip:This pickup is not flexible almost in all possible ways. It can only be installed on the neck, not on the bridge. It can`t provide enough distortion for aggressive playstyle and modern rock genres. It doesn`t work that great with bass.

The sound might be muddy, when this humbucker is used with certain guitar. At least that`s what people say. Neither I, nor my friends had any problems with sound though, it was clean and clear enough.

Short Conclusion

This pickup is all classy and standard. I would say this is a perfect pick for a student, who enjoys following rules while studying. Duncan`s SH1n is also very good for playing blues and classical rock. There are more versatile models available though, so if you are love experimenting with positioning, consider other options as well.

Pros
Easy to use
Great tones
Standard spacing
Cons
Versatility
Sound filtering

DiMarzio PAF DP103

DiMarzio is an American company, founded by a guy with Italian roots. DiMarzio is specializing specifically on guitar pickups. The company uses the semi-unique technology, which makes its` production valuable.

Main Features

So, the main feature of this pickup (looking really punk by the way) is that it uses soft magnetic fields for regulating the sound. It is coated in a special material as well, which helps to prevent feedback and unwanted distortion.

The thing about PAF pickups is that they usually provide a lot of output. Although this model is a PAF as well, the output it provides doesn`t affect the sound, leaving it warm and smooth. Players describe it as a very organic one.

Speaking of sound, it is beautiful. It turned that several friends of mine had actually used this humbucker and each of them independently said, that the final result of the sound was noticeably clearer in comparison to usual models

Tip:Finally, the build of this model leaves no doubts about its` quality. All the details used are made of highly durable material. The manufacturer didn`t save any money even on the smallest details, so DiMarzio`s pickups will serve for a long period of time.

The biggest problem, that the guitarists met was the lack of volume of the sound. It didn`t feel overwhelming nor juicy. Again, this argument is based on the internet review, those several people, whom I know in person did never say anything bad about the sound quality.

What they didn`t like though was the design of these pickups. They are simply unattractive: the colors are not matching, the thing looks a bit awkward in general. But this one I consider a minor disadvantage, which has zero impact on the playing process.

Short Conclusion

PAF pickup is different from the other pickups. It uses a bit different technology, which results in softer and a bit vintage vibes. The general quality of this exact model is more than satisfying. However, if you are a beginner and not sure what to start with, I`d rather recommend choosing a classical pickup.

Pros
Optimal output
Clear and loud sound
Build quality
Cons
Flat sound
Design

EVH Frankenstein

Frankenstein is the American manufacturer, that makes pickups. As the Frankenstein`s representatives say, they try to concentrate both on great design and great functioning. As far as I found out, they handle both tasks nicely.

Main Features

EVH is an improved version of old Frankenstein`s battle-worn humbucker. It has an improved design and some better technical features. What I personally enjoyed about it is how comfortable it can be adjusted.

There are two major differences, that people point out, that I managed to notice myself as well. First: the harmonics sound more intricate. Second: it is hard to describe from an academic point of view, but the sound just feels hotter than usual.

Tip:Aside from that, EVH is just a generally good pickup. It has a nice build quality, it is working nicely and there are no signs saying, that it will be working as good after several years of exploitation.

Well, the price isn`t actually too high, like there are many pickups on the market, which cost much more. It just feels like the price is higher than it should be for the set of qualities this humbucker has.

People usually describe it as “not a game-changing one”. It does provide some new experience, but just a bit. Buying this pickup is like buying a brand new promoted burger only to find out that it is a big-mac without lettuce. Unique – yes, fresh and new – no.

Short Conclusion

This pickup is worth buying, if you`ve already tried several out and need a bit of a change. It would also be a decent first pick, though it`s a bit too expensive for the beginner. If you have enough money for investing into a set of equipment, EVH Frankenstein is a decent pick, but if you are tight on budget or just want a classic one, there are certainly better options.

Pros
Unique adjustments
General quality
Cons
The price

General Conclusion

So, I would like to finish this article with several recommendations on choosing a pickup. I`ve changes two dozens models of them during fifteen years, so I know what I am talking about.

  • Test several pickups[/li_option]

Pickup humbuckers are usually cheap, so purchasing two or three instead of one won`t hurt your budget a lot. Each pickup has unique individual characteristics, so your preferences may easily differ from mine or from other people`s reviewing stuff. You may find something, that isn`t highlighted in any of the reviews, which will make the playing process more comfortable for you personally.

  • Don`t buy pickups that are obviously bad[/li_option]

Sounds cheesy, but there is a lot of sense in this advice. There are some thigs, which you are a hundred per cent sure are bad, but still buy them. Like Chinese headphones, which break after a month, some cheap wires, etc. Pickup humbucker should not be included in this list. Having a bad one as your first, may ruin the whole experience of playing a guitar. Therefore, if you don`t have enough money to buy a decent, rather play with no pickup at all and save some funds for later.

  • Don`t buy a very expensive one, if you are a beginner[/li_option]

Unlike many musical accessories, pickup is almost a completely independent thing. Its` performance doesn`t depend on other equipment you have. Still, the main problem is that the beginners often overestimate their will to study music and invest too much into a starter kit of musical stuff. So, if you`ve already decided to purchase a lot of accessories, do yourself a favor and choose your first pickup from the affordable category, even you have enough money.

Well, this was it for this article. Thank you for reading and good luck!
