Short Intro

I didn`t know about Rocksmith, until a student of mine asked me, which guitar he should choose for this developing game. After finding out what Rocksmith was, I made the whole research and found several guitars, all being different, but all being equally good as a game controller. So here is the review of each of these guitars. To write it, I did the following things:

  • Tried playing Rocksmith with the guitars I already had

This didn`t help much, but gave me the general idea, that Fender`s guitars and the guitars from Ibanez feel more convenient in this game.

  • Looked for fitting guitars

I read a lot about how the game was developed and what the developers themselves recommend. This helped me with working out, which type and which price category are the best for this sort of activity.

  • Chose the final six guitars

My final requirements were: being both a good controller and a good instrument; having development potential; having a reasonable cost and great value.

Well, now we`re finished with the introduction. Let us proceed take a closer look at the models.

Ibanez RG450DX

Ibanez is the brand, that belongs to a Japanese company Hoshino Gakki. The company has been around since 1927, so they`ve managed to produce lots of guitars, suitable for different purposes. Ibanez RG450DX, for example, is good for playing Rocksmith.

Main Features

It`s a convenient and beautifully designed guitar, with double cutaway. It has a durable body, made of mahogany and maple neck. Overall, it is a powerful and durable electric guitar.

Ibanez RG450DX has a thick wooden body, that has been developed specifically for withstanding the long and aggressive playing sessions. Moreover, the material combination is optimal for transporting the item as well.

When it comes to the actual session itself RG450DX is showing powerful and juicy sound, which is good in general for all styles, but the action can be lowered a lot, for easing the aggressive play.

Tip:The whole design of the guitar is meant to make the playing process easier. The double cutaway, which opens more space to reach the strings, the thin neck, which is really easy to hold, etc.

Volume controller of this guitar isn`t sensitive. The only two positions which make difference are either full on or full off. There is a drop off in the middle, where loud sound suddenly becomes quiet with no middle option.

Another problem is connected with middle as well. Middle positions, when played by themselves are showing worth level of sound, than the bridge and the neck ones. This can be solved with replacing a pickup though.

The Guitar in Action

I hadn`t hold a double cutaway guitar for a while, so it was not easy to get used to it at first. However, after like twenty minutes of practicing I managed to fully appreciate, how comfortable the whole structure is. I guess, this is one of the best options for the beginners, who want to learn playing the electric guitar.

Short Conclusion

There are some minor issues here and there, and a little work has to be done to make this guitar a perfect one, but the result is worth the struggle. The true Japanese quality combined with the skill of engineers and designers results in one of the best guitars for Rocksmith and al the learners in general.

Pros
Build Quality
Low Action
General Design
Cons
Volume control
Middle pickup

Epiphone Les Paul-100

Epiphone is a child company of Gibson, one of the World`s largest musical equipment manufacturers. It used to be an independent company till 1957. Gibson, in fact, didn`t interfere the company`s inner policy, so Epiphone`s guitars are still original.

Main Features

The first feature worth mentioning, that the developers themselves considered this guitar the most suitable for Rocksmith. It was included in a starting bundle, which means a lot. Well, after all it`s an original Les Paul guitar, which can compete with Telecaster and Stratocaster.

Les Paul started building the guitars, while he was a teenager. He, for sure, knows which materials are the best for an electric guitar. A classical combination of mahogany body with a maple top and a rosewood fretboard was used to make Epiphone Les-Paul 100 durable.

Tip:The “recipe” for this guitar was made in 1960s, and it had never been changed. Engineers didn`t try to fix the thing, which had already been performing great. So, the Epiphones you can buy today do not differ from an original version.

Finally, I have to mention the sound quality. It is absolutely beautiful, warm and crispy, but can also be regulated to be more aggressive. Whichever action you choose though, it will always stay balanced.

All the problems are connected with tuning. This casual process suddenly becomes a trial, when you are using an Epiphone`s Les Paul100. Partly because of strings, partly because of the tune gets lost soon. Well, this can actually be useful, as once you learn to tune this guitar, you`ll be able to tune any guitar.

The Guitar in Action

I enjoy my sunburst version, as holding it gives me a lot of esthetic pleasure. I am even more pleasured with the sound, as it clearly shows how powerful rock can be.

Short Conclusion

Epiphone Les Paul 100 is a great guitar for any player, starting with the beginners and ending with the advanced guitarists. Not the most professional guitar though and tuning might get annoying after a while, but this a value purchase for sure.

Pros
Reliable
Classical design
Sound quality
Cons
Hard tune
Doesn`t stay tuned long

Squier by Fender Stratocaster

Fender has occupied the top of the musical equipment manufacturers more than thirty years ago and remains the biggest company in American musical industry till this day. One of the reasons is their iconic Stratocaster, which is to be reviews right now.

Main Features

Stratocaster is a classical electronic guitar, with a double cutaway and a bit lengthened upper “horn”, which provides more balance. This model has been a definition of what an electronic guitar must be since 1950s.

The first thing I have to say is that Stratocaster is the most versatile guitar in this list. It can be used for any genre. No matter whether it is reggae or death metal, Stratocaster can handle everything equally great.

Partly, because the guitarist feels extremely comfortable while holding this guitar. It is built to balance itself, so the instrument feels as light and accessible. The strings are manufactured by Fender as well, so they complement the body perfectly.

Tip:Finally, the sound is balanced, but has a great attack potential. That`s why Stratocaster is especially popular among the rockers. Overall, tones are full and juicy and the volume is rather loud

This exact model of Stratocaster is not manufactured in the United States, so there might be some problems with the quality of details. I`ve seen multiple complains on pure build of this guitar. Honestly, the price seems too low for such a guitar and there had to be some pitfall.

The Guitar in Action

Despite the non-american details the guitar is performing quite good. It is indeed balanced and convenient and provides decent sound. Again, the unique type of double cutaway is a bit tricky to handle at first, but it is possible to get used to.

Short Conclusion

This Stratocaster allows you to feel the whole power of the original one. However, some extra investment might be required to improve the quality of performance and fix possible breakdowns. So, I`d not recommend to purchase this guitar with your last money, as this may lead to disappointment.

Pros
Versatility
Comfortability
Great attack
Cons
Quality of assembling

Yamaha Pacifica Series PAC012DLX

Yamaha is an international company, with the head office in Japan. Yamaha was founded in 1887, but became popular only after the Second World War. There is one product from this manufacturer in the list.

Main Features

Yamaha Pacifica is the most affordable guitar in the list. I tried to choose one guitar for this list, which would be better than average cheap electric guitar, but which would also leave an option to switch it for a better one with no regrets.

The guitar has no extra specific elements, which seems rather bad first. Later, however, you realize, that although it`s not especially good for any genre, neither it is bad for any of them. Yamaha Pacifica is showing decent performance in all music styles.

Tip:It has the out-of-the-box low action, which makes the playing process more comfortable. This is a huge bonus for beginner, as low action guitars do not hurt fingers that much.

Finally, the design of this guitar is charming. There is a chance, that you would like to leave as a part of your environment even after you upgrade to a better instrument.

By saying too simply, I mean whole lots of things, which you only start understanding after trying several guitars and learning music for a while. The sound feels flat, the set is limited, etc. A beginner will not notice all these things though, so it`s a problem only for advancing players, who are looking for the second or the third guitar.

Another problem, which is more obvious is a little distortion, when you start jamming hard. Natural distortion doesn`t sound bad, and it isn`t too loud, but it might still be there sometimes.

The Guitar in Action

This was the first guitar, I tried for Rocksmith, and it was doing pretty good. While being a decent guitar by itself, Yamaha Pacifica also performs great as a controller for videogame.

Short Conclusion

This is a valuable purchase for any beginner, willing to learn to play the guitar through Rocksmith. Durable build, great sound. The overall simplicity will make you change the guitar after several years though.

Pros
Versatility
Low-action
Design
Cons
Too simple
Noisy performance

Squier by Fender Stratocaster Agathist

That`s another variation of Fender`s Stratocaster, which has a different body, a slightly different design. The manufacturer is not located in the Northern America, so it shares similar problems with the previous model.

Main Features

So, there are all the features from the previous model, including high attack quality, controllable action and comfortable design. The main difference is the body material and the pattern.

The guitar`s body is made of agathist and maple. Agathist is a softer type of wood, so it feels even more convenient to hold this guitar. There are still those self-balancing cutaway horns and other standard features.

What feels even better is the process of playing, which can be made either smooth and easy, by lowering the strings action (reducing the distance between strings and body) or making it deeper by increasing the action.

Finally, the attack of this guitar is worth being emphasized, as it sounds extremely powerful.

Tip:The assembler is the same, as mentioned in the previous Fender`s guitar in this list, so problems are basically the same. Some parts may occasionaly be broken. Mine guitar had no problems though.

The Guitar in Action

So, you might be wondering, why two similar guitars are in the list. There are two reasons: agathist model is cheaper and it feels a bit softer. A better option for the beginner, speaking generally.

Short Conclusion

Fender Agathist is a great guitar for the beginners, who are willing to feel the power since the very first practicing and improve their skill with guitars of high quality. There is a major drawback though. This model will only be suitable for the first two or three years, it is very likely to break during that period, and you`ll need to buy a better guitar later.

Pros
Comfortability
Adjustable action
Attack
Cons
Construction problems

Ibanez 3/4 Size Mikro Electric Guitar

Finally, there is a ¾ guitar from Ibanez. The smallest guitar in the list, which makes the most suitable for children and all the players with small hands in general. It also feels more like a controller, than like a real guitar, so playing Rocksmith will be easier.

Main Features

Well, the main feature of this electric guitar is it`s size. This model is much smaller, than the regular ones, so it is easier to carry it around, it is easier for children to play it, and it is easier to use it as a controller, once you`ve decided to learn through playing.

So, if we are looking at this guitar from the perspective of a game controller, its` size is definitely a big (or should I say small (pun included)) advantage. In big hands of an adult man it feels more like a toy, but for a younger player it will definitely be more convenient.

Designwise, there is nothing to complain about. The guitar has smooth black laminate finish. There is a double cutaway, so reaching the strings is equally easy, through the whole length of the guitar.

Tip:The performance it provides is decent as well. In fact, this micro guitar does not differ from a regular-sized one. I asked a friend to differ two instruments by sound and he failed (miserably).

Sadly, this guitar comes with awful factory adjustments. It must be re-tuned, re-worked, and re-adjusted to sound properly. From this point of view, a lone beginner, who is learning the music by himself will have certain issues with setting the guitar. If you, on the other hand, are ready to pay extra bucks to a local music shop guy, you`ll not have any problems.

The Guitar in Action

Playing Rocksmith with this guitar felt more like playing a game, than like playing an actual guitar. From this point of view, learning through gaming seems more possible than ever.

Short Conclusion

A good guitar for a traveler, a beginner and a child. Grown-up man should choose a full-sized version rather.

Pros
Size
Design
Performance
Cons
Requires a lot of adjusting

General Conclusion

Here is a couple of wise words to end this text. I highly recommend you to decide, whether you want to play a game or to learn the guitar and advance in music industry. If you chose the first case, than guitars in the list (except the ¾ Ibanez) will not be suitable for you. I`d rather recommend to buy a cheap electronic guitar or a controller and use it instead. That will both help you understand, if the music is what you want to do further or not and save some money.

If you have already decided, that you want to learn the music through playing and are ready to continue playing even without Rocksmith, than choose a guitar, that will meet your requirements from the list. Each of them belongs to that type of guitars, which has a lot of development potential. So, when you decide to go for your own small performances, you`ll not need to look for the new guitar, but will be able to work with the material you already have.

This was it for this article. Thank you for reading and good luck!
