I`ll make a short introduction first. I completed the following steps while writing the review:

  • Contacted the singers I know

I have some experience of singing, but I never was a professional singer. Therefore I asked some friends of mine to share their experience with me and, if possible, provide an amplifier for the test.

  • I checked the online reviews and completed the voice test

I actually managed to live test all of the models in the list, either by myself or with my friends. I also looked through the online shops and took notes of what people considered important about the amplifiers.

I compiled all the collected information in this article, so here it is for you.

TC-Helicon VoiceSolo FX150

TC-Helicon is a Canadian company. It manufactures voice amplifiers. In fact, it is a child company of a bigger Danish company TC-Electronic. This is a solid company, that has already been on a market for over thirty years, delivering great equipment for all that time.

Main Features

The first and foremost, the sound quality is great. I`ve tried recording the voice separately, the music separately and then both of them together. Each time the results were clean. The quality of the sound was high, there were no excessive noises.

Another feature that I found really convenient is the easy-grip system. It “remembers” the settings of the system you used the last time, and when you suddenly have the moment of inspiration, you press one button only, and the system starts recording, kinda adjusting itself.

I`ve seen and heard several reviews from different people, who all said, that VoiceSolo FX150 stops working properly after two or three months of exploitation. Well, this might be true, as the model is considered a budget one. However, fixing a problem won`t cost much due to the same reason.

Tip:Another known problem is that the sound is loud enough. I wouldn`t consider this a problem at all, as there is always a possibility to amplify the sound. However, if you have a compact studio, are tight on budget or travelling, this may indeed become a serious drawback.

The Amp in Action

I`ve already mentioned, that I tried this device in action, recording the voice and the music. All the records had similar high quality, so I can`t say, that it is only good for singing or recording the voice. It is universal. The easy-grip system, by the way, works great and is convenient indeed.

Short Conclusion

If you are beginner, this is a great choice. VoiceSolo FX150 is a great voice amplifier, convenient and developing the possibilities. However, if you are an advanced voice actor/singer, you can find better options on the market, as durability of this one is doubtful.

Pros
Clear and clean recording
Easy-grip system
Cons
Build quality
The volume

Roland Cube Monitor / PA

Roland is a comparatively old Japanese company. It is known for making all kinds of musical equipment and having multiple child brands. Such companies as Boss, Edirol and Cakewalk are all branches of Roland.

Main Features

If you are looking for something extremely durable, Roland`s Cube is the safe bet. It has durable shape (cubical items are indeed harder to break, than any other), it is built of durable material and it even has survived my personal crush-test when I accidently dropped it on the ground from five feet.

Another thing is the versatility. The Cube is equally good for amplifying the voice and the music. It can be used as an instrumental amplifier.

Tip:It can be placed almost anywhere, as the size is compact and the shape, again, is super convenient. I would call this amp a multitool.

I`ll start with a more traditional problem: highs and lows (below C2 and over C6 specifically) sound a bit distorted. This is only a problem for non-singers though, as my extremely low voice sounded OK, and I`ve only heard the complaints of this type from those people, who were recording instrument sessions.

The second problem is a bit more complicated. The sound is not all right, when played on low volume. It is not distorted or something, but a bit misrepresented.

Tip:As one guy said “When I tried recording on a low volume, it felt like I was playing a completely different instrument”. So, keep this in mind, if you have a small home studio.

The Amp in Action

I tried recording with both regular and low volume, trying highs and lows as well. Well, the disadvantages were there, all as mentioned, but they were not as bad as people tend to describe them. In fact, for a rocker this type of an amplifier would have no bad sides at all, as all the misrepresentations sound great with a bit of distortion.

Short Conclusion

If you are struggling to choose between several models or looking for something fresh, Roland`s Cube is what you need. It is unusual starting from shape, ending with the performance. It will both satisfy the basic requirements and provide some fresh experience. However, if you are choosing the first voice amp or looking for a super consistent model, there are better amps I guess.

Pros
Solid build quality
Versatility
Cons
Highs and lows
Problems with low volume

Fender Passport Mini

Fender is the name that speaks for itself. In 20 years it will celebrate the 100th anniversary. The company started as a guitar manufacturer, but soon started making all sorts of musical equipment.

Main Features

Fender`s equipment is like a good car, wherever you buy it, it will always be performing with the same high quality. Passport Mini is not an exclusion, it provides decent sound, clear and loud.

What I personally enjoyed the most about it though is the amount of built-in sound effects. There are chorus, flanger, a couple variations of reverb, delay and simple echo. While this is not as important for instruments, it can really help the beginners with fixing some voice issues. Especially the reverb, which can cover any minor mistake easily.

Tip:Finally, Passport Mini is named Mini for reasons. It is super compact and will fit in a large backpack. So, if you are planning school performances or some activities like that, Fender Passport is the amp, that will always be with you.

I`ve read a lot of reviews, and, well, faced this problem myself. Although everything is signed, it is still rather hard to find out which knob you should turn or what pull. It is possible to get used to it, but the first experience, especially if you are a beginner, might be unpleasant.

The second, which is met surprisingly often, is the problem of durability. On paper everything seems stable, but as it comes to action, people say, some parts break. Nothing broke for me though, and there is always a five-year warranty, so there is not much to worry about.

The Amp in Action

The test has shown, that when it comes to recording vocal, Fender Passport Mini is good, but when it comes to recording instrumental music it`s even better. So if you are planning to make a lo-fi track for example, this one will be perfect.

Short Conclusion

The only thing, that can really stop a person from getting Fender`s amp is lack of time to have it repaired once in a while. All the other parameters are much than the average in this price category. A good choice for both the singer and the instrumentalist.

Pros
Sound quality
Build-in effects
Compactness
Cons
Hard to use
Build problems

BEHRINGER ULTRACOUSTIC AT108

Behringer is the most german-sounding word I`ve heard in a while. The company is indeed based in Germany. It was founded by a swissman in 1989 and has been successfully since that time.

Main Features

There is a thing called “German Engineering”, which pretty much summarizes it all. It`s by far the most convenient amplifier, in terms of adjusting and starting the recording process. All the in-s, out-s, knobs and handles are placed comfortably. As a bonus, there is a CD-input, which allows to listen to music and play along it.

I would also like to emphasize how unique the sound is. The best words to describe it are “warm and crispy”. It sounds like an old vinyl amp, but without the crackling effect.

Let us start with the real one. High notes (above C6) sound distorted and a bit weak. It`s not a tragedy, that ruins the whole experience, but if you have a soprano, than you should really consider another options.

Tip:There is one more disadvantage, which is really a minor one, but I had to mention it. The manual is hard to understand. Luckily, there are lots of videos online + finding out how the things work is easy even with no instruction at all, so that will not be your biggest trouble

The Amp in Action

My low voice in combination with guitar sounded all right. I tried singing high, and it did sound awful (I am not sure if amp was the problem though). Everything had been working fine during the test, there were no out-of-the-box problems

Short Conclusion

If you need something, that has both enough potential for your further skills development and is simple at the same time, than AT108 is your choice. It will not be suitable for jazz, blues and lady singers though.

Pros
Simplicity
Warm sound
Cons
Bad highs
Bad manual

Neewer Amplifier

Neewer is a young American company, specializing on accessories for photographers and musicians. The main feature of Neewer`s production is its` affordability.

Main Features

I`ll not count the price as an advantage for obvious reasons.

Neewer`s amplifier can be used for basically any purposes and with any devices. It`s compatible with electronic guitars, basses, synths, microphones, USBs, tablets and phones. The developers suggest using it for performances, practicing and singing karaoke.

They`ve even packed a box full of necessary stuff for this purpose. Except the amp itself there are an AC adapter and 3.5 cable (and a manual of course). Noting surprising, but a good for a beginner, who has nothing at all.

Although the manufacturer claims, that the amp is strengthened with extra defensive layer, I doubt that it can survive a crush test. All the defensive layer is made of plastic, just like the most details as well.

This leads us to the next problem – the quality.

Tip:It would be wrong to call the quality horrible, as for such a low price you get a decent device, but it will never outperform even a semi-professional amplifier from the higher price category.

The Amp in Action

All I can say, is that Neewer`s amplifier is the best karaoke tool, I`ve ever met. Especially if you enjoy outdoors parties and annoying your neighbors (turned out to be an unexpectedly loud one). It`s not something a professional would use for singing or recording, but for the amateur, I guess, it`s the best pick.

Short Conclusion

I would say, that this is a “just in case, I would like to sing sometimes” amplifier. It`s a good voice amp for occasional parties and garage jamming, but if you have a goal to become better at singing, there are lots of more decent choices to make.

Pros
Compatibility and versatility
Nice box set
Cons
Durability
Overall quality troubles

BEHRINGER ULTRATONE KT108

Here is the second Behringer`s product on the list. It`s, so to say, AT108`s sibling, which has some individual qualities though.

Main Features

Well, this amplifier is all about being both cheap and highly adjustable. There is a lot of regulation options, including an individual controller for lows, mids and highs, as well as one for gain. This makes shaping the sound easy.

What else makes the shaping easy is the design. KT108 is designed in such a way, that all the knobs are located in one place, and you can clearly see the difference between them. So, there will be no confusion with the adjustment.

Tip:To be honest, flat sound wasn`t a sudden surprise, as all the affordable compact amplifiers share this problem. This is, by the way, not the big problem for a beginner, who needs to work on basic skill, as the volume of sound doesn`t matter that much on that stage.

Another problem is that this amp is not loud in comparison to the others in this list. It will not be suitable for concerts and public performances. However, the loudness control works well, which means, that you can reach very quiet sound and practice without annoying roommates.

The Amp in Action

I had been a bit tired of monotonous amp testing by this moment. So, I made one casual test only. The only conclusion I can make is that all the advantages and disadvantages stated above are reasonable. Everything works exactly as stated.

Short Conclusion

If you are a shy musician and want to practice silently in your room, this is the best choice. 100 per cent guarantee to never annoy anyone and great adjustability. There are more consistent amps for public performances though.

Pros
Tones
Simplicity
Cons
Flat sound
Loudness

General Conclusion

Let me finish this article with several recommendations on choosing the voice amplifier:

  • Find out what your voice timbre is

It is important to know if you have high voice or low voice. Once you find it out, check the online reviews and pay attention to what people say about the lows and the highs. I`ve personally known a girl, who had a great soprano. She was performing in a small pub once and there was an amplifier, which distorted the high notes, so she sounded badly.

  • Don`t save on it

Voice is the most important of the song, so, if you want to perform or go professional, you need to make sure, that the amplifier you chose will make your voice better. In case you are a beginner, I would strongly recommend to purchase a universal amplifier, which will be suitable both for your instrument and voice.

This was it for this article. Thank you for reading and good luck!
