Introduction

Let`s get right into it. Here are the criteria I chose and the process I went through:

The criteria

It is impossible to find a universal harmonizer, but, in my opinion, whether it is a device for a touring professional or for the very beginner, there should be some standards. Here are mine:

  • Reliable manufacturer

It doesn`t matter if you are at the very beginning or on the pick of your career. You always want the product you purchase to be of a high quality. You always want to be served properly and receive the service when required.

  • Development potential

Having a probability to develop the skills even further is important. Therefore, four out of five models in the list have lots of adjustment options and many possible variations of sound regulation

The Process

I did the following things, while looking for the final five harmonizers for this list:

  • Contacted my friends, who are singers

I was getting the basic raw information from the experienced musicians. They explained me some basic stuff about what a harmonizer pedal should be, named several manufacturers and models. I also asked them to share some experience about using specific pedals

  • I checked the manufacturers online

I looked through multiple harmonizers online, compared their characteristics (price and quality) to find the most valuable ones. Then I checked the online reviews and chose the five final candidates to be on this list. So, here it is.

TC-Helicon Harmony Singer

TC-Helicon is a Canadian branch of Danish company TC-Electronic.

Main Features

TC-Helicon is a compact blue pedal with several knobs. It looks practical and powerful, and so it is indeed. Let us take a detailed look at its` main features.

There is a lot of sound parameters you can adjust. Specifically four types of reverb, several options for compression and equalizing, and more leveling features. Everything is placed neatly, so even if you don`t know what each exact effect means, it is really to find it out while practicing.

The beautiful thing about practicing is that it can be held almost anywhere, as this harmonizer is a really small one. It can be carried around in a backpack or a guitar case. It doesn`t weigh much as well.

Tip:Although TC-Helicon is working great, it will probably not be working long.

I`ve met several reports saying, that this item is not durable, that it starts distorting sound after two or three of exploitation, that it may simply stop turning, and some other complaints. I`ve never owned such a harmonizer, so I can not proof or disproof these words, but as I`ve seen multiple persons reporting the same problem, I guess it might be true.

Short Conclusion

The item has a 4 out of 5 stars rating on multiple online rating platforms, so many people have tested it and it worked fine most of the time. For some people though, the experience ended badly. I personally think, that as long as you are a beginning singer, TC-Helicon`s Harmony Singer will be a nice choice, as it provides all the necessary functions.

Pros
Lots of adjustment options
Compactness
Cons
Durability

Digitech VLHM Vocal Effects Processor

Digitech is an American company, making specifically the sound amplifying devices.

Main Features

The first look makes you think, that you are holding an alien ship controller. In several seconds you realize, that it is just a vocal harmonizer with multiple adjustments and futuristic designs. Then you try it in action and find out the following things.

You don`t need to be a professional musician to understand, that lots of things can be adjusted. The amount of handles, knobs and switchers is way too high. I didn`t calculate the exact amount of possible combinations, but I think it is almost infinite.

Another thing that developers did was building in some extra features, just in case you`ll need them. The most important of them, in my opinion, is the looper, which helps with creating complicated sound effects.

Tip:There is a built-in guitar tuner, just in case you decide to tune the guitar. Not the most necessary thing, but may come in handy once.

The design, as I`ve already mentioned, reminds more of a spaceship, than of an actual music equipment. It is not easy to handle even for an experienced musician, the beginner will surely get confused.

Another problem, which I consider more important, is that sometimes the harmonizer stops working properly, so you need to unplug it and then plug it in again.

Short Conclusion

This voice harmonizer is a perfect choice, if you enjoy sitting attentively and learning how the things work. It has some built-in tools, which will be convenient. However, if you are looking for a plug-n-play device, this will not be the best option.

Pros
Adjustability
A built-in looper
A built-in tuner
Cons
Complicated design
Tends to lock up suddenly

TC Helicon VoiceTone

In fact, TC-Helicon has more than one product worth considering.

Main Features

This harmonizer is probably the first one, that combines versatility, adjustability and non-complicated design. Let us take a look at each of these sides in detail.

First of all, the versatility. TC-Helicon VoiceTone can be used with the musical instruments and microphones simultaneously, so it is possible to play something and sing along to the melody.

This will be especially convenient, because there are, again, lots of adjustments to make. Several reverb effects, FX, tone, voice regulations and some more complicated ones.

Tip:But what makes VoiceTone especially pleasant to use, is its` simplicity. Despite all the options, everything is neatly organized. The manual included provides all the necessary information.

These disadvantages sort of pair one another. The first of them is the durability, which multiple people have said to be average. The only real person, whom I know, using this harmonizer had no troubles during the whole warranty term.

If you however get unlucky and purchase a purely assembled item, you`ll meet another problem – the service quality in some regions. I`ve contacted three guys, who complained about being served badly. They all were from different locations, so repairing the harmonizer might be a problem.

Short Conclusion

As long as it is working, there will be no problems. It`s good for the beginners (except the completely new to music) and for the advanced players. It`s nice material for both learning and performing. However, once something starts going wrong, you might have troubles with reparation process.

Pros
Versatility
Adjustability
Simplicity
Cons
Durability
Service quality

Boss VE-2

Boss is an American company, that has been on the market for several decades already.

Main Features

It is a rather small red box, that has all basic inputs and outputs, has lots of sound controlling options and provides great sound. The device is rather good-looking, but the practical part of design sucks. Let us take a closer look.

The first thing, that delivers is the quality of sound. You can`t really tell that the harmonizer sound is good, until you compare it to other devices. I`ve listened to all of them in the list, and, a little spoiler, from the pure sound quality perspective this one is the best. It delivers the cleanest, the most harmonic sound.

It continues performing nicely even in a multitask mode, when there are both the guitar and the mic plugged in.

Tip:I had to an expanded test, trying separately the acapella singing, singing along to the music and performing the guitar solos. Boss VE-2 handled all the tasks perfectly.

Design is inversely proportional to the sound quality. As good as it works, as hard it is to adjust it. The controllers are placed all over the surface, inputs and outputs are situated in one place and are not organized at all. The incsriptions are small, which can lead to a stressful situation, when you are trying to find out what you need to do in the dark backstage.

By the way, talking about the stages. This is not the best harmonizer for big concerts, as the bigger the room is, the worse the sound quality will be.

Tip:This rule doesn`t apply to home studios or small school or pub stages, but if you decide to use it outdoors, you`ll hear the feedback almost certainly.

Short Conclusion

Boss VE-2 is an amplifier for advanced musicians, who have already found out how the basic things work and plan to start performing. However, the beginners will have problems with working out the way to control it, while the professionals need more powerful equipment.

Pros
Sound quality
Versatility
Cons
Design
Performance in huge halls

Donner Dt-1

Donner is a small American company, that specializes on making compact controlling pedals.

Main Features

This pedal is the smallest one in the list, as one is the easiest one to handle. This is not a direct advantage though, as the simplicity is caused by lack of many functions. Still, this certainly deserves to be in the list.

Donner DT-1 is a swiss-knife in a world of vocal harmonizers. It can be placed in the pocket and stay there without causing any trouble until the moment you need it. This is really a small pedal.

So small in fact, that manufacturer simply had no place for all the complicated adjusters. There is an input, an output, a controller and a digital screen. Literally nothing to be confused about.

Tip:By the way, digital screen is there, because the pedal has a built-in electronic guitar tuner. So, at the very least, you`ll be able to use it that way.

While it is simple to use, there is not much to do with it. Donner DT-1 provides a limited amount of adjustments, so it gets boring pretty soon. As I like to say, there is no development potential in this device.

Another thing is, that is completely made of plastic, so hot and cold temperatures, water contacts and dropping can easily kill this harmonizer.

Short Conclusion

This is a nice little item for the players on budget and the beginners. It will be doing its` job, however, once you decide to go touring or learn more music tricks, you`ll need to find a more powerful replacement.

Pros
Compact size
Easy to use
Built-in tuner
Cons
Lack of options
Physical durability

General Conclusion

Okay, the main part of the review is over now. However, here are several recommendations from me:

  • Make sure you need a vocal harmonizer

Vocal harmonizer is not in the list of the most important things for a musician (not even that important for a singer). While it helps to create some beautiful effects and slightly improve the voice, it will not do the magic trick and make a non-experienced musician sound professional. Moreover, most of the harmonizers are complicated, adjusting them requires understanding of basic an advanced music theory as well as some experience. So, if you are a beginner or an amateur, rather invest the money in a better guitar or microphone.

  • Make sure the harmonizer meets all your requirements

Although this advice is simple, there are many people, who don`t follow it. I can`t make the choice for you, but here are some basic recommendations: a traveler – durable; a beginner – simple, clean sound; an advancing player – adjustability, versatility.

Well, this was it for this article. Thank you for reading and good luck!
